SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant & Time-bound).
Successful Goal Diggers who believe God created them to accomplish HIS divine purpose also follow my 3G Method for setting their goals:
By now, we all know about SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant & Time-bound).
1. God-Given: Just because something is a good idea doesn’t mean it’s a God idea. Some of our ideas have one too many o’s! King David wanted to build God’s temple (definitely a good goal), but God made it clear He wanted David’s son Solomon to do that, not David. The goal was good, but it wasn’t God. Proverbs 16:9 says “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” So, never mind what sounds good. Before you go all beast mode, spend some time now talking to God and asking for His guidance on what to conquer next.
2. God-Guided: Often when we fail to reach our goals, we conclude maybe it wasn’t a God-given goal after all, so it was doomed from the jump. Not so fast. There is such a thing as going about a right thing the wrong way. If God gave you the goal, then you better believe He has a lil something to say about how you go about achieving it. Proverbs 15:22 says “Refuse good advice and watch your plans fail; take good counsel and watch them succeed.” So of course I believe in hiring competent, experienced professional advisors (I am one!), but before you call your accountant, lawyer, publicist or anybody else, get with God and get HIS counsel on accomplishing your goal. Then, get with your tribe of trusted advisors and go be savage!!
3. God-Glorifying: As Christians everything we do is supposed to glorify God. After all, it’s the reason we were created. So this one sounds pretty easy, right? Not exactly, because it requires some real sou
l-searching: What’s your motive behind your goal? Why do you want what you want? To glorify God, your goal doesn’t have to be super-spiritual. There are plenty of practical goals like lowering your A1c, paying off your student loans or learning a new language that can glorify God and further His plan for this world. Ask yourself: Will the process to achieving this goal honor God and the person He created me to be? What about this accomplishment will point people to the magnificence of my God?
Bottom line? We need to make sure our goals ar
e Spirit-led, and not flesh-driven.
After we check for these 3 Gs, THEN we can craft SMARTER goals!
